Elon Musk By Walter Isaacson
I suspect many people will skip over this book because of their feelings about Elon Musk, be it his political leanings, outspoken nature, or public persona in recent years. That’s a shame, because Elon Musk by Walter Isaacson is an excellent read and offers a fascinating, detailed insight into Musk’s life, mindset, and ventures. It covers the good, the bad, and the undeniably brilliant.
Whatever your opinion of him, it’s difficult to deny the scale of what he’s achieved. Isaacson, as ever, excels at digging beneath the surface to explore not just Musk’s business empire but the complexity of the personality that lies behind it. Unlike some of his previous biographies, this one gives Isaacson unusually close access to his subject, offering an inside view of Musk’s daily life and business activities.
Love him or hate him, Musk’s sheer force of will is remarkable. To achieve what he has in electric vehicles and space exploration is nothing short of extraordinary. Critics may point to government subsidies or fortunate timing, but even with those factors considered, it’s impossible to build companies of that magnitude without an exceptional level of determination, intellect, and risk tolerance.
A recurring theme throughout the book voiced by many who’ve worked alongside Musk is whether the qualities that make him successful are inseparable from his more difficult traits. Can you achieve his level of impact without the volatility and intensity that come with it? So far, the answer seems to be no. Is it a worthy sacrifice for those who dislike him to bear given what his companies give back to the world? That’s down to you determine for yourself. For me, it’s a yes.
This is a highly recommended read for anyone interested in business, entrepreneurship, or the psychology of extreme success. In an era that celebrates work-life balance, Musk’s story is a study in what happens when the “life” part is sacrificed entirely in pursuit of vision. Is it worth it? That’s debatable but based on numerous biographies of successful businesspeople it’s also down to a personal choice and sense of purpose.
Despite his wealth and accomplishments, Musk often comes across as restless and even at times tortured by the need to keep moving forwards, somewhat comparable to a perpetual motion machine. One thing is certain though; the world has undeniably benefited from his relentless drive.
Who’s it for?
If you’re a fan of Musk, this is essential reading if you haven’t read it already. If you’re not, it’s still worth exploring to understand what makes one of the most influential and controversial figures in modern business tick. For anyone who enjoys biographies of bold thinkers and industry disruptors, this one belongs high on the list.
