The Intrinsic Value Podcast
I’ve mentioned The Investors Podcast network before when reviewing Richer, Wiser, Happier, and The Intrinsic Value Podcast sits under the same umbrella while maintaining its own dedicated feed. The separation is useful as the TIP network covers a broad range of shows, so having this one available as a standalone stream makes it easier to manage and sort through.
The podcast is hosted by Shawn O’Malley and Daniel Mahncke, with a new episode released every Sunday. Each episode focuses on a single company, with the explicit aim of determining whether it deserves a place in their Intrinsic Value portfolio. They started the portfolio at the same time as the show, and much to their credit the hosts have maintained transparency throughout its first year which I expect will continue far into the future. Portfolio tracking isn’t a prerequisite for an investing podcast, but given the emphasis on valuation and intrinsic worth, it adds a meaningful layer of credibility.
Alongside the podcast is an accompanying newsletter, which mirrors the analysis for those who prefer to read rather than listen whilst adding a bit more depth in the way of charts and visuals. It also includes updates on the portfolio, which helps keep the overall package grounded in real decisions rather than just hypothetical analysis.
Episodes typically run between sixty and ninety minutes. The majority of each show is spent working through the company’s business model, key themes, strengths, weaknesses, and the respective bull and bear cases. The final section is where Shawn and Daniel walk through their valuation model, explaining how they arrive at what they believe to be the company’s intrinsic value and whether it meets their criteria for inclusion.
I don’t always agree with their assumptions or conclusions, but that’s part of the value. They’re very open about the fact that this is their model, clearly laying out the inputs and rationale, and they actively encourage listeners to adjust the assumptions themselves. That openness makes the podcast as much a learning tool as it is an investment resource.
Taken as a whole, this is a high value offering. When you factor in the depth of research, the consistency of the episodes, the newsletter, and the ongoing portfolio updates, it earns a strong place in any investing focused playlist. Even if you only follow one part of the package, be it the podcast or the emails, there’s more than enough substance to justify your time investment.
Who’s it for?
This is a purer investing podcast than some others I listen to. If you’re looking for broader business deep dives, alternatives like Acquired or ACQ2 are a better fit. The Intrinsic Value Podcast is best suited to investors, whether experienced or early in their journey, who want to learn how to analyse businesses, think about valuation, and decide which companies are worth deeper research.
