Pryor Convictions and Other Life Sentences

Brilliance comes in many forms and is often subjective. For many comedy lovers, though, Richard Pryor earned that title within the world of stand-up. He may not be listened to as widely today as he was a few decades ago, but that takes nothing away from his status as one of the greatest comedic minds of all time.

As is often the case with those who make others laugh for a living, Pryor’s humour was born from hardship. Pryor Convictions and Other Life Sentences dives into his childhood and family life, exploring the early experiences, both formative and traumatic that shaped him into the performer he became.

The book traces his journey from his early years in Peoria, through honing his craft and modelling his early style on Bill Cosby, to the darker turns that came with fame, drugs, excess, and self-destruction. Having grown up watching Pryor’s stand-up and films, I couldn’t help but hear his distinct voice and delivery as I listened. That familiarity did add to the listening experience, though I imagine for those new to him, it might be worth watching some of his classic routines first to fully appreciate the rhythm and energy behind his storytelling.

Despite its relatively length, the book covers a considerable amount of ground. The later sections are particularly striking, dealing with Pryor’s struggles, including a suicide attempt as well as his raw, honest reflections on living with multiple sclerosis. Even in moments of deep vulnerability, Pryor manages to retain his sense of humour.

Rarely do I read an autobiography by those of fame, fortune and acclaim that don’t come with complex upbringings, backstories and challenges that money couldn’t help them avoid. Pryor shines a light on his life without sugarcoating it, offering a portrait of a man whose genius, flaws, and resilience are all seemingly inseparable from one another.

Who’s it for?

If you’re a Pryor fan, then this is definitely one for you. For anyone who loves comedy, it’s a fascinating look into the life and mind of one of its true pioneers. And for readers who simply enjoy autobiographies that reveal the complexity behind fame and success, Pryor Convictions won’t disappoint.
